The perfect middle ground
Growing families need furniture that grows with them. While some pieces may work great for the time being, sometimes, you’ve got to think of the future - especially when it comes to your child’s bed frame.
As a slight upgrade over a standard single bed, a small double bunk bed provides a solid balance between relaxation and practicality. The top bunks offer more than enough space for younger children, while the small double bottom bunks provide a few extra inches of width for their older siblings who struggle to fit into a single.
The benefits of small double bunk beds
Designed to mix comfort and space-savings, small double bunk beds come with plenty of benefits, such as:
Saving space: bunk beds, including small double bunk beds, are excellent at reclaiming lost space. Rather than dividing a room up with multiple bed frames, combining multiple beds into one can help free up the space, unlocking the room’s full potential.
Money savings: matching furniture across multiple children’s bedrooms is not only challenging, but can also be expensive. Sometimes, combining your furniture into as few pieces as possible can be a more cost-effective approach compared to buying separately.
Bonding: sharing is an important lesson for your children to learn. One way of teaching them this is by having them share a bedroom. This will help your children learn how to split things evenly, and have respect for personal space.
Considerations when buying a small double bunk bed
To make sure a small double bunk bed is the perfect choice for you, make sure you consider the following points:
Safety: because of their elevated sleeping area, bunk beds come with safety features built-in to prevent accidents. Whether it’s barriers, borders, or railings, each bunk bed we sell was designed with your child’s wellbeing in mind. Make sure you teach your children how to safely get in and out of the bed, too!
Room size: room size is one of the most important things to remember while choosing a bed frame, especially in children’s bedrooms. Compared to guest rooms or master bedrooms, your kids will often have much smaller spaces to work with, which is where a bunk bed really shines.
Storage needs: different types of small double bunk bed will offer different forms of storage. Some will have pull-out drawers or shelves, some will leave plenty of unused space to slide your own storage boxes underneath. Both are great for storing bedroom essentials like pillows and bedding, but make sure you consider these before buying, as you might be able to make even more space savings than you originally thought.
Age ranges: for frames with two bunks, only children over six years of age should be allowed to sleep on the top. Depending on how old your child is, the type of bunk bed you choose may need to change. Older children, for example, will have much more space to relax on a small double compared to a single. But, if your child has their own bedroom, they might benefit more from a small double bunk bed with storage, instead of another bunk.

Assembly: every bunk bed we sell will arrive flat-packed. This does mean that self-assembly is required, but don’t panic: putting your small double bunk bed together shouldn’t need more than one to two hours of your time, as well as a few hand tools. Make sure you have: a screwdriver (or a low-powered drill) with Phillips, pozi drive, or hex heads, and a soft mallet.

Maintenance: keeping your bunk bed clean shouldn’t be a chore. All you’ll need is a clean damp cloth to wipe down the surfaces every so often. Make sure you avoid any harsh cleaning chemicals, as these could impact the finish.
Types of small double bunk beds
To help you and your children customise their personal space, we stock a variety of different styles of small double bunk beds. This includes different materials, and storage options.
Small double bunk bed styles
So that you can make your child’s room truly their own, we offer small double bunk beds with or without storage drawers. The small double mattress on the bottom allows for deeper drawers to be placed under the bottom bunk, giving plenty of room for pillows and bedding.
Other bunk bed styles available include:
Triple Bunk Beds: feature a double/small double mattress on the bottom bunk (or three stacked single bunks), which offers plenty of room to grow.
Gaming Bunk Beds: come with integrated desks to hold the perfect gaming setup.
L Shaped Bunk Beds: offer an L-shaped desk to enhance space and storage.
High Sleeper Beds: provide enough space for taller storage options like wardrobes and bookcases.
Mid Sleeper Beds: allow for shorter storage options like cupboards and cabinets.
Low Sleeper Beds: have lower top bunks than mid sleepers, offering storage with shelves and cubbies.
Detachable Bunk Beds: also known as convertible or separable bunk beds, detachable bunk beds can be split into two separate single beds if needed. This provides greater flexibility, making them a splendid long-term investment for growing children or changing bedroom arrangements.
Storage Bunk Beds: designed with built-in storage solutions such as drawers, shelves, or even hidden compartments under the bed or stairs. These space-saving beds are perfect for keeping toys, clothes, and other essentials neatly tucked away, making them ideal for smaller bedrooms or kids who need a little extra organisation.
Small double bunk bed materials
Bunk beds, including small double bunk beds, are generally made from two materials:
Wooden Bunk Beds: wood is a lightweight material that provides good durability and strength for years of use.
Metal Bunk beds: although sometimes heavier than wood, metal provides more resistance to bending and warping in comparison.
Small double bunk bed dimensions
Small double bunk beds are slightly larger than a single, but not as large as a standard double. They measure 4’ (120cm) in width, which is an additional foot over a standard single and 6” smaller than a standard double. Both the small double and standard double have the same length measurements: 4’ 6” (190cm).
Single Bunk Beds (3'0" x 6'3"): suitable for most children over four years (on the bottom bunk only), as well as young teenagers, single bunk beds are the smallest size we have available.
Double Bunk Beds (4'6" x 6'3"): double bunk beds are the largest size on offer. They can comfortably fit two sleepers if needed, with six more inches of width over the small double.
