Spacious, yet practical
When it comes to bed frames, larger is often better. However, you may sometimes struggle to fit a double bed in children’s bedrooms without giving up something in return. Whether it’s floor space or storage, it’s hard to have everything at once. This is where a double bunk bed can be especially helpful - giving your children the space to relax, as well as play!
The benefits of double bunk beds
With a focus on spaciousness and convenience, double bunk beds come with many advantages, such as:
Saving space: thanks to their wider footprint, double bunk beds offer greater storage opportunities compared to singles. This can be used to feature underbed storage such as drawers, or larger storage units like wardrobes and cupboards.
Money savings: kitting out an entire room with furniture, especially a children’s room, can be costly. Compared to buying separate pieces, sometimes it can be more cost-effective to combine your furniture where possible.
Sharing and bonding: it’s important to teach your kids how to share, especially while they’re young. Bunk beds and room sharing in general is great for this. Together, your kids will quickly learn the value of splitting things evenly, including their personal space.
Considerations when buying a double bunk bed
Before checking out with your child’s new bed, make sure you consider the following:
Safety: bunk beds will come with safety features such as barriers and railings built in around the top bunk to prevent accidents. Make sure to teach your child how to safely get in and out of the bed before they do so unsupervised.
Room size: although all our beds come flat-packed, it’s worth considering the dimensions of your child’s room before ordering. Double bunk beds are wider than singles, which can take up a bit more floor space.
Storage needs: depending on how much storage your child needs, your choice of double bunk bed may change. If you have spare bedding and pillows to keep out of sight, a double bed with drawers can be especially helpful.
Ages: with bunk beds, top bunks (like those featured on double bunk beds) should only be used by children six years of age or older. Make sure your child knows how to safely get up and down the ladder, too. Your child’s age can also influence the style of double bunk bed you choose. Older children may want their independence, which can lead you towards double bunk beds with storage, for example.

Assembly: to make for an easy delivery, your bunk bed will arrive flat-packed. This means it’ll need to be built by you. Don’t worry, though. Building a bunk bed requires just a few hand tools, including: a screwdriver (or a low-powered drill) with Phillips, pozi drive, or hex heads, and a soft mallet.

Maintenance and care: looking after your bunk bed can help preserve it for many years. Make sure you wipe it down occasionally with a damp cloth. Don’t use harsh chemicals, as these can strip the finish of the frame.
Types of double bunk beds
Bunk beds, and especially doubles, come in all shapes and sizes. We’ve got many different options available for you to choose from:
Double bunk bed styles
Depending on your child’s age, their storage needs, and the size of their room, the style of bunk bed you choose can change. We’re bunk bed specialists, and have covered all possible variations:
Triple Bunk Beds: feature a double/small double mattress on the bottom bunk (or three stacked single bunks), which offers plenty of room to grow.
Gaming Bunk Beds: come with integrated desks to hold the perfect gaming setup.
L Shaped Bunk Beds: offer an L-shaped desk to enhance space and storage.
High Sleeper Beds: provide enough space for taller storage options like wardrobes and bookcases.
Mid Sleeper Beds: allow for shorter storage options like cupboards and cabinets.
Low Sleeper Beds: have lower top bunks than mid sleepers, offering storage with shelves and cubbies.
Detachable Bunk Beds: also known as convertible or separable bunk beds, detachable bunk beds can be split into two separate single beds if needed. This provides greater flexibility, making them a fabulous long-term investment for growing children or changing bedroom arrangements.
Storage Bunk Beds: designed with built-in storage solutions such as drawers, shelves, or even hidden compartments under the bed or stairs. These space-saving beds are perfect for keeping toys, clothes, and other essentials neatly tucked away, making them ideal for smaller bedrooms or kids who need a little extra organisation.
Double bunk bed materials
Bunk beds are often made in either metal or wood. Each one has its own advantages:
Wooden Bunk Beds: wood is used across multiple types of bed frame because of its light weight and durability. Wood is easy to clean, work with, and repair.
Metal Bunk beds: compared to wood, metal is less prone to warping and flexing over time, and can be more rigid.
Double bunk bed dimensions
Double bunk beds are designed to fit double mattresses, which measure 4’ 6” (135cm) in width, and 6’ 3”(190cm) in length. Remember: the bed frame itself will be larger than these dimensions by a few inches. If a double is a touch too large, we do have other bunk bed sizes available:
Single Bunk Beds (3'0" x 6'3"): suitable for most children over four years, as well as young teenagers, single bunk beds are the smallest size we offer.
Small Double Bunk Beds (4'0" x 6'3"): sitting between single bunk beds and standard double bunk beds, small double bunk beds add an extra foot of width, while keeping the same length as a single.
